Understanding the Symptoms of ADHD

Your child rushes in the door every day appearing as though he or she took a hit of some drug that gave them energy. The child acts out of control, and says things that disappoint you.

Each day you try to teach the child right from wrong, but the child comes up with consistent excuses why you are wrong. You toss your hands up in the air and wonder why you bother to teach your child. Then you watch the child as he plays with his friends and notice that he tires out of the game in a short time.

The child is instructed to do his homework, but after a few minutes, he claims his head hurts and he cannot take anymore. Go rest you tell him, and he turns to go toward his bedroom all to run down the stairs in less than five minutes, claiming he is bored.

When your child talks it sometimes makes little sense and you become agitated when you notice your child often fails to use common sense. He often speaks out of turn and seems to enjoy hurting other people’s feelings, and failing to see why he is wrong.

The next day you get that familiar call from school. Your child has interrupted the class once again and a meeting needs to be set up to redirect his goals. The behaviors are consistent and nothing seems to change.

When changes do, come about it is short lived. If you are experience, any of these problems with your child you might want to take him or her to a mental health expert.

More than likely your child will be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, otherwise known as ADHD. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has a series of symptoms. The symptoms include inattention, hyperactive, short tension spans, coordination disabilities, hearing and seeing disabilities and so forth.

The child will often complain he or she is bored during play and learning. The diagnose will interfere with your child’s ability to grow and learn. Since, this disability has many handicaps and symptoms your child has the ability to learn at rapid speeds.

This means any set backs in education can send your child to the roof. Because the child lacks the ability to use common sense it often seems as though the child is retarded. This is not necessary true.

A child of retardation will have an IQ level below 70 and will lack the ability to learn at a normal speed. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity patients often learn at rapid speeds because of their inability to focus on one project for a length of time. Now we can see a genius in the making if only we can structure his or her developing process.

Developing requires systematic strategies to help the child appreciate any single meaning of growth. If the child believes that his or her behaviors are normal and everyone else is out of control, then we see a problem in development. This means we need to redirect the child’s thinking patterns.

How can we redirect his or her thinking when the child is convinced that he or she is right and everyone else is wrong? Since learning is, a pattern that develops behaviors over time, we know that time is of essence in teaching and redirecting the child’s thinking.

Practices brings forth good results, therefore we might help him or her redirect their thoughts by holding up to consistency. If the child is struggling in one area, redirect him or her to a less complex problem and work slowly up to the struggling area.

We can do this by minimize the child’s responsibilities. Actions often speak louder than words, so if we are telling our child something he does is inappropriate then we need to practice what we preach.

Observation has proven to be one of the most effective tools in learning and teaching. In fact, observation is the number one tool for helping a child to learn. We can also help the child by reducing our level of frustration.

When the child sees we are upset because of his symptoms, it is telling him that his diagnose is punishable.
